I’ll admit that when my son first started walking I contemplated the idea of purchasing a baby leash for him. He would make me crazy with his wobbly speed and dead accuracy at choosing the perfect times to wander away from me. If we were anywhere dangerous like a parking lot or a crowded store, he could be counted on for bolting from my side and causing me heart palpitations as he toddled away toward danger.

When I was a baby, the only thing my parents used to keep track of me in my crib were their own ears. I grew up in the days before all the fancy baby gadgetry and a baby alarm to keep tabs on the baby would have seemed as bizarre to my parents as a nanny spy cam. To keep track of what I was doing in my crib, they would stay within hearing range of my room and if they heard me cry out, they would come in and check on me. They did not have the luxury of a baby alarm sounding whenever I cried, like parents raising kids today do.

The first thing you realize when becoming a parent is that you need a separate house, just to keep all the baby equipment in. For such tiny creatures, their stuff certainly takes up a great deal of space. Going out to visit family and friends is a military exercise, and can’t really be spontaneous. You have to think ahead and decide what baby equipment will be needed. A lot of parents keep a bag ready and packed with all the baby equipment they’ll need. Going on vacation requires even more preparation.
