It’s True, All Work And No Weekend Breaks Make For An Unhealthy Environment!

My husband and I have been working extra hours over the summer trying to get a new business off the ground. It seems that the things that we always have considered fun pass times such as gardening and working in the yard are now added to the list of things that have to get done. We decided that we needed to take weekend breaks.

We have not spent any time concentrating on anything but business seven days a week. What started out as fun is becoming more and more of a chore. We knew we needed to schedule the weekend breaks or we would not take them.

The first weekend we decided that we would travel along a scenic highway and stay at a small bed and breakfast that is close to a lake. This was a great time, however we found that we were discussing the business and were also concerned about the money we were spending to have our time away. We decided that our weekend breaks could not be too costly or they would add to our stress level. On our way home we decided that we would schedule a period of time on Saturdays and a period of time on Sundays when we would have our weekend breaks. We would either do something together or with friends during these scheduled times.

This has worked great. The last two weeks my weekend breaks have included spending time in my flower beds and enjoying the work rather than just getting it checked off a list. I also have gone bike riding with a neighbor. We cook leisurely meals together and then spend a long period of time enjoying the food and cleaning up the kitchen area together. These simple tasks allow for quality time and do not require additional funds. So often we get caught up in the idea that in order to enjoy weekend breaks we have to spend money and leave home. We have enjoyed our scheduled break time at home. It makes the weekends seem longer because we are not traveling anyplace and do not have to take time packing and unpacking.

Our weekend breaks this week are going to be sharing a new dessert with the neighbors over a game of cards one night and going to a neighborhood bar for a few drinks with friends on another night. Simple things that bring rest to the mind and spirit; for us this is what taking a break is all about. I have found that I have more energy and enthusiasm to devote to our new business when I take the time to have my weekend breaks.
