Tips
to housebreaking and training your dog to follow your commands.
Dogs
are considered to be man’s best friend and they have proved
time and time again to be wonderful loving pets. But before they
can become you’re best friend, you’ll have to go through
some rough patches to get your dog to co-exist with you. This is
called dog training or house training your dog.
A few
tips and tricks to training your dog are:
- In order to get dogs to understand you, you need to be consistent,
Use specific words for the same command and try to maintain the
same tone of voice. Otherwise your dog might get confused.
-
When you’re training your dog you will need a release
command. Pick a simple release command (example: Go! or Ok) and
use it when necessary. Always use the same command so that your
dog will recognize it. Also, remember to use the release command
after you are done with your training session so your dog can
relax.
- The first thing you want to do when trying to housebreak your
dog is to teach it to not create a mess around the house. Give
your dog a specific spot and cover it with a mat or even newspapers.
Even if the dog seems to have settled somewhere to do its business,
move it to that spot. This is to potty train the dog to only do
its business at one spot or area in the house.
- If you are thinking of training your dog, start with the simplest
of tricks. Sit, and Stay are two excellent tricks to start training
your dog with. After your dog has learnt these simple tricks move
on to heel and fetch.
- To encourage your dog during training, bring along some small
snacks. Whenever your dog completes a trick or follow orders give
it a treat. You have to be firm about this or the dog will assume
that it will get a treat whether or not it follows your instructions.
Only treat the dog after it has done the trick.
- In order to condition the dog, use the same praises like Good
or Excellent. This also needs to be consistent during dog training
along with snack giving.
- Training your dog on a regular basis is much better than trying
to train your dog sporadically and only when you feel like it.
So in order to house break or train your dog, you will need to
set aside some time daily and follow the routine till the dog
can do the trick or tricks when you give an order, not just when
you feed it.
