Fly
fishing - Flyfishing tips and techniques that go back to the basics
for beginners and veterans.
If
you’re tired of your regular hobby or you’re sick of
boring ol’ fishing and you’re longing for something
a little more energetic, you might want to read up on fly fishing.
Here are some fly fishing tips to help beginners get started, and
to help the veterans brush up on their fly fishing techniques.
- You don’t have to spend too much on your first fly fishing
rod. A basic rod can cost you from as low as $85 to $200.
-
To get started it is even recommended you borrow a second hand
fishing rod from your guide or friend who is introducing you to
the sport. There isn’t a point in spending too much on equipment
that you might not use the future.
-
As a beginner you will need to decide on the type of fish you
will be hunting. What you hope to be fishing will affect the type
of reel that you need.
- Will you be fly-fishing for small fish like trout and bass?
If they are then you will only need to get a cheap click-and-pawl
reel.
- For casting, it is always better to go back to the basics whether
you’re a beginner or a long time fly fisher. Watch the loops
of fly line. Practice making a big letter "C" loop.
Then work on the tight letter "J" loops.
- A common exercise used to practice casting is to use about
30 feet of line to make a couple of normal casts. Then, attempt
to come really close to the tip of your rod with the end of your
leader (without actually hitting the rod). Play around with this.
- If you’re a beginner, try to get your guide to help you
listen to how the proper casting should sound like. During the
back-cast you should not hear anything but the line itself. However,
during the forward cast there may be a ‘whoosh’ sound.
- The final instruction that one can give you for fly fishing
is to always rmember that fly fishing like any other hobby or
sport, is supposed to be fun, not aerobics. Once learned, fly
casting is something you can do for the rest of your life. It’s
exactly like riding a bike.
- If you are a beginner, the best way to top off your effort to
learn fly fishing is by getting a book that helps with you learn
the ins and outs of fly fishing. Books for fly fishing beginners
are easily obtainable online at a cheap price for a heck of a
lot of knowledge.
