Tips
and techniques to help your prepare for the important job interviews
and answer tough questions.
- Preparing
for the interview is almost as important as the interview itself.
Preparation for your job interview includes gathering information
about the employer and the company. This will help you appear
informed and intelligent during the job interview.
-
During
the interview you will want to seem self-confident and yet spontaneous.
A tip to help you achieve this is to rehearse! Do not practice
what you will say but instead think about how you will say it.
Practice and rehearse for the job interview in front of the mirror
and study your posture and body language. If possible get a friend
to help you do a mock interview to practice making eye contact.
-
During a job interview it is understandable to be nervous which
may cause us to sometimes speak too quickly and babble along when
asked questions, especially tough one. So remember to pause first
and listen to the question before trying to answer it. Here are
some examples on how to handle and answer some tricky job interview
questions:
1.
What are your weaknesses?
An example of a bad answer would be to say something like “My
weakness is that I work too hard.” Interviewers rarely believe
that and you come off looking bad as well. Instead, try to state
something that you want to improve on like “My knowledge on
budgeting is weak but I’ve been reading up on it.”
2.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
“In your chair” is the worst answer you could give for
this question even if you are planning to vie for that particular
position in the future. Instead, it is suggested that you explain
that you want to continue learning and that you hope to progress
through the company. Even if you are unsure it is ok to admit so
but do express interest by asking about any future opportunities
for advancement.
3.
What will you do if you don’t get this job?
The most important thing here is to not sound desperate and the
best way to deal with an interview question like this is to turn
disappointment into opportunity. Demonstrate to the interviewer
how you can cope positively with setbacks by saying something like
“Obviously I would be upset but I would like to find out the
reasons behind your decision.” At this point it is also advisable
to ask for a feedback on your application and interview and use
the information to work on areas that need developing
