The
orchid care guide - practical tips for growing & caring for
orchids in your home.
Orchids
are fine plants to have in and out of the house. They are colorful
and pleasant to look at, as well as hardy and fairly easy to care
for. Some general guidelines and tips are available below to help
in growing and caring for your own orchids.
-
Good lighting is important for planting orchids. Orchids need
about 10 hours of shaded light in a day.
-
Orchids do not do well in hot and stuffy conditions so care for
your plants by having good ventilation.
- Plants
like orchids thrive in a humid environment. So to increase the
humidity you can try placing orchids on a tray of damp pebbles.
-
Misting the leaves can also help your orchids grow well. Remember
to spray the mist around the plant instead of spraying it directly
on the plant.
-
Of course fertilizer is necessary for healthy plant growth. Apply
the fertilizer as recommended on the label once a month or half
strength every 2 weeks.
-
Fertilizing
every 2 weeks with a half strength fertilizer will provide a more
continuous nutrient supply.
-
Growing orchids is more of an art rather than science so things
can go wrong even when you are following the growing instructions.
The important thing is to learn from your experience.
-
For example, brown spots can develop on the orchid leaves. If
the spots are hard and dry it means that your orchid has been
scorched by the sun. The remedy for that is to shade the orchid
and there will be no need to remove the spots.
-
However if the spots are soft, this means that they are caused
by a fungal disease and the affected parts need to be removed.
-
When growing orchids, never be afraid of growing them as a house
plant. As long as they are given proper lighting, temperature
and humidity, orchids will grow well whether they are in the basement,
sun porch or living room.
