Basic
guitar lessons and tips you can follow to learn how to play guitars.
Learning
how to play a guitar isn’t too hard if you follow instructions
well. Taking guitar lessons can probably help you learn how to play
the guitar better. Meanwhile here are some general tips and instructions
on how to hold and play a guitar. After the lesson it is always
important to practice what you have learnt to improve your playing
style. Online guitar lessons can also help you practice and improve
on what you have learnt here.
- Firstly
you need to learn how to hold the guitar. The basic way it to
hold it so the back of the body of the guitar is at your stomach
or chest and the bottom of the instrument neck is parallel to
the floor.
-
Normally a right-handed person will hold the guitar so the headstock
points to the left and vice versa for a left handed guitar player.
-
Do note however that there are separate guitars for right and left-handers.
-
When
playing the guitar sitting down, you are to have the body of the
guitar resting on your legs.
-
When you’re learning how to play the guitar we refer to
the hand closest to the neck of the guitar as the fretting hand.
-
The thumb of the fretting hand should be at the behind of the
neck of the guitar with your fingers in a slightly curled position
above the strings.
-
The tip is to have the fingers curled at the knuckles except when
specifically instructed not to.
- The
hand playing the guitar is known as a picking hand. You can either
use a pick (which is usually recommended) or strum with your fingers.
- When
you position your picking hand at the soundhole or body of your
guitar. Remember not to rest it on the strings or on the body.
-
Now using your wrist and not your arm, try striking the lowest
string of your guitar in a downward motion.
-
If the string rattles excessively that means that you have to
learn how to strike the string a little softer or learn to use
less of the pick’s surface.
-
Now repeat what you did in step 10 but using an upward motion
this time.
-
Repeat the last few steps several times to get a feel of playing
on the guitar. Remember to minimize the motion on your picking
hand.
-
Next practice on alternate picking by doing a downwards picking
stroke and then an upwards-picking stroke.
